GRIOT Circle is an intergenerational and culturally diverse community-based social service organization responsive to the realities of older lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, two-spirit and transgender people (LGBTST) of all colors.
Regina Shavers co-founded GRIOT Circle to combat the lack of community that she observed among LGBTST elders, particularly those of color. She assumed the role of Executive Director of GRIOT Circle in 2000. GRIOT Circle offers a safe space for elders and emotional support and quality programming which affirms age, gender, racial, spiritual and the ethnic origins for the over-50 LGBTST community.
GRIOT Circle provides educational and informational forums, referrals to social service providers, health and fitness programs, spiritual wellness, computer training, social outreach and a friendly visitors program. Volunteer members make reassurance telephone calls and visits to home-bound, sick or hospitalized persons.
The range of activities and presence of a real community–and extended family–provides GRIOT members a support network to aid with coping and negotiating the unique challenges endured by elders of color.
GRIOT Circle is a non-profit organization based in Brooklyn, New York (www.GRIOTCIRCLE.org). We are part of the global community of elder support agencies and are committed to engaging in the exchange of ideas and progressive conversations wherever they occur. There is no membership fee required to become a member, but members are usually at least 50 years young.
